In an interview with Josh Mateer, Marketing Automation Manager at Weave, we analyzed the secret to becoming a strong marketing professional. Skilled in Salesforce CRM, Microsoft Dynamics, Maropost, Sales, Team Building, Management, and Networking, this is what Josh had to say:

About Josh Mateer

Josh Mateer: It’s because of my immense love for all things tech that I built a career in Marketing Operations and Automation. With seven years of experience in this field, I am a Marketo Certified Expert and have primarily worked in the SAAS industry.

Reasons to love marketing operations

Josh Mateer: Marketing operations is the perfect balance between analytical and creative skillsets, and that’s what I love about it. Operation is the lifeblood of marketing, and if not taken seriously, it can create chaos in the entire system. Other than driving the pipeline for a successful marketing campaign, I also love being behind the scenes and being able to strategize and implement new technologies and workflows.

One thing people should innovate for marketing operations

Josh Mateer: It would be great to have a better-centralized hub for like-minded and career-oriented individuals to get updated information on the current landscape and the future of the marketing operations community. I want people to innovate a space where marketers can network and work with one another to accomplish the best for the community.

Thoughts on outsourcing marketing operations

Josh Mateer: You can outsource the creation of HTML and emails to a specialist, but the planning and execution should stay within the company.

Common problems and challenges of global marketing operations teams

Josh Mateer: Getting the buy-in from all appropriate members of cross-functional teams is the biggest challenge that the Global Marketing Operation team is facing. I believe that ensuring everyone is on the same page before initiating a campaign is very important since the marketing operations team will see the project from start to finish. It also means that we need to look forward and backward and check for potential roadblocks and problems that might arise.

Advice to marketing operations professionals

Josh Mateer: Coming from SAAS, it seems like marketing operations is more of an afterthought, and I think it’s essential to set up your marketing team correctly to be able to be successful. Thus, I wish I had received full buy-in from other members of my marketing team to accomplish the projects that I deemed necessary to help the business function.

Favorite MarTech tools

Josh Mateer: For me, Siftrock is a must-have for email automation and managing replies. I love Leandata and Marketo for both data validation and marketing automation. Also, Zapier is great for automation and integrations.

Secrets of being a successful marketing operations warrior

Josh Mateer: I make sure that my work time is dedicated to working and free time is spent not worrying about work. Setting a designated schedule and assuring that I stick to that is the secret to my success. Also, saying no when needed is important because many problems and challenges might need to be prioritized.

Five words that best describe Josh

Josh Mateer: The five words that best describe me are hungry, caring, creative, operational, and goal-oriented.

Fun activities

Josh Mateer: Venturing out to become a novice skier and outdoorsman in Salt Lake City, Utah, I am a basketball, golf, and video game addict. Besides everything, I have a pet dog whom I love the most.

………..

Thank you, Josh, for this unique insight into the life of a marketing operations expert and for enlightening us with tips to improve a marketing operation professional’s approach to his/her profession.
